Can NYSC Post A Corper To Serve In His State of Origin?
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a mandatory one-year programme for Nigerian graduates who are below the age of 30. The programme aims to promote national unity, integration, and development among the diverse ethnic groups and regions of the country.
The NYSC programme involves three phases: orientation, primary assignment, and passing out. During the orientation phase, the corps members undergo a three-week training in a military camp, where they learn about the history, culture, and values of Nigeria, as well as some basic skills and drills.
During the primary assignment phase, the corps members are posted to various places of work, such as schools, hospitals, ministries, or private organizations, where they are expected to contribute to the development of their host communities.
During the passing out phase, the corps members are issued with the NYSC certificate, which signifies the completion of their service year.
One of the questions that many prospective corps members (PCMs) ask is: Can NYSC post a corper to serve in his state of origin? The answer is NO.
According to the NYSC Act, the corps members are posted to states other than their state of origin, where they are expected to mix with people from different ethnic group, social and family backgrounds, and learn the culture of the indigenes of the location they are posted to.
This is to foster national integration and cohesion, as well as expose the corps members to the diversity and richness of Nigeria.
However, there are some cases where the NYSC may post a corper to serve in his state of origin, based on certain criteria. These criteria are:
- Marital Status: If a female corper is married, she may be posted to serve in the same state as her husband, even if it is her state of origin. This is to enable her to stay close to her family and avoid any marital problems. However, she must provide evidence of her marriage, such as a marriage certificate, a letter from her husband’s employer, and a change of name in the newspaper.
- Health Condition: If a corper has a serious health condition that requires constant medical attention, he or she may be posted to serve in his or her state of origin, or a state that has the necessary medical facilities. This is to ensure the safety and well-being of the corper. However, he or she must provide evidence of his or her health condition, such as a medical report from a recognized hospital, and a letter from a medical doctor.
If a corper falls into any of these categories, he or she may apply for relocation to his or her state of origin, or any other state of preference, during or after the orientation camp. However, the approval of the relocation is subject to the availability of vacancies and the discretion of the NYSC authorities.
Conclusion
The NYSC programme is a compulsory one-year programme for Nigerian graduates who are below the age of 30. The programme aims to promote national unity, integration, and development among the diverse ethnic groups and regions of the country.
The NYSC programme does not post a corper to serve in his state of origin, except for some exceptional cases, such as marital status and health condition. This is to ensure that the corper experiences a different culture and environment, and learns new things.
However, if a corper wishes to serve in his state of origin, he or she may apply for relocation, subject to the approval of the NYSC authorities.
